New York Motorcycle Accident Lawyer

Attorneys in Flushing, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, New York City, Garden City & Nassau County, NY

During the past few years motorcycle accidents have accounted for 14 percent of New York City traffic fatalities, while only two percent of NYC’s registered vehicles were motorcycles. Even more disconcerting is the fact that more than half of the riders involved fatal crashes were under the age of 35.

For many years, public bias has existed against motorcycle riders, and mostly due to the actions of a small percentage of bike riders. They have been viewed as rebels or troublemakers. This perspective does not hold true for the majority of bike riders who abide by traffic laws and drive safely, yet it is a good reason for motorcycle riders to obtain legal counsel when injured in crashes with other vehicles.

Many people do not realize that the most common reason behind motorcycle crashes is poor visibility, both for riders and other motorists. It is easier for a motorcycle to get lost in a motorist’s blind spot than it is for larger vehicles. People often do not see a motorcycle in time to stop and avoid a collision.

Other Prevalent Causes of New York Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcycle riders in NYC experience fatal crashes at twice the rate of motorcycle riders in New York State (NYC.gov). The following are some of the other underlying causes of motorcycle crashes:

  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Tailgating
  • Failure to yield the right of way
  • Making illegal turns
  • Mechanical failure due to improper repair or maintenance
  • Road hazards

When and Where Do Motorcycle Crashes Most Often Occur?

The most common times for motorcycle crashes to take place are in the afternoon or evening, on weekends and during warmer seasons. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays see the highest percentage of accidents (47%). June, July and August are when 42 percent of the motorcycle injury crashes occur.

More motorcycle accidents occur on city streets than on freeways. Motorcycle accidents happen most frequently at intersections and in particular when cars are making left-hand turns. An estimated 42 percent of accidents involving a motorcycle and other motorist occur under these conditions, with the vehicle that is turning left striking the motorcycle as it goes straight through the intersection.
