NYC Traffic Accident Deaths Rose in 2019

Three pedestrian accidents occurred in New York City on January 7, 2020 that resulted in three fatalities. Each death occurred in a separate accident. As of January 7, New York City has a total of five pedestrian deaths for 2020.

According to The New York Times, at least 122 people died in pedestrian accidents in 2019. Statistics had increased, from 203 traffic fatalities in 2018 to 219 traffic fatalities in 2019. In fact, in addition to pedestrian deaths, more cyclists died in traffic related deaths in 2019 than had died in the past twenty years.

Concrete Mixer, Sanitation Truck and Bus Cause Three Pedestrian Accidents

Sanitation Truck Accident

In Queens, a sanitation truck hit a 10-year old boy and his mother (age 40) around 7:00 a.m. The boy was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital Center. The mother was initially in critical condition. The truck had pulled out of a driveway and was making a right turn when it struck the mother and son. They were walking in a crosswalk on the way to the boy's school. The Sanitation Department put the driver on modified duty and stripped him of driving responsibilities.

Concrete Mixing Truck Accident

In the Borough Park area of Brooklyn, a concrete mixing truck struck a 68-year-old woman crossing in the middle of the block. The accident occurred around noon on New Utrecht Avenue. As the light changed, the woman passed directly in front of the truck. She was pronounced dead at the scene. One resident described the intersection as chaotic and dangerous whereas another resident said they had not had problems. Other residents said the area where New Utrecht and other streets converge was thick with traffic.

Bus Accident

The bus accident occurred close to 6:00 p.m. on Fifth Avenue near 59th street. A bus struck a 51-year-old man while he was crossing the street. The bus left the scene, and the accident is under investigation. It was unclear whether the man was in a crosswalk or not. He later died at the hospital.
